A griot [/ˈɡriː.oʊ/ (GREE-oh)] is a West African historian, storyteller, musician, and/or poet. Acting as living archives, they preserve genealogies, tribal histories, and cultural traditions through oral performance, often accompanied by traditional instruments like the kora or ngoni. Griots are masters of communicating stories and history orally, which is an African tradition.

Across Africa, griots preserved history, heritage, and identity through storytelling, passing knowledge from one generation to the next.

Tales of the Griot continues that tradition, transforming stories into garments that can be worn, remembered, and carried forward.

The baobab tree, often called the “Tree of Life,” has for centuries been associated with gathering, wisdom, and continuity. Its immense trunk and enduring presence make it a natural symbol of memory itself, standing witness to the passing of generations. Beneath its branches, communities assemble not merely to hear stories, but to participate in an act of cultural preservation.

Under the Baobab Tree reflects the essence of oral tradition: history carried through repetition, rhythm, and communal presence. Here, stories are not fixed records confined to a page.
