One of West Africa's most celebrated oral traditions, the Epic of Sundiata has been preserved for centuries by griots, who carried history through memory and song. It tells the story of Sundiata Keita, the 13th-century founder of the Mali Empire, whose life blended historical events with legendary deeds.
Born to Sogolon, a woman foretold in prophecy, Sundiata entered the world under extraordinary expectations. Yet his childhood was marked not by strength but by hardship. Unable to walk and mocked by rivals within the royal court, he seemed far removed from the greatness predicted for him.
Through determination, the support of his family, and the wisdom of his community, Sundiata gradually overcame these challenges. Forced into exile after political upheaval, he spent years forging alliances and learning the qualities of leadership. When the Mandinka people faced the growing threat of the powerful sorcerer-king Soumaoro Kanté, Sundiata returned to unite divided kingdoms.
His victory at the Battle of Kirina marked the beginning of the Mali Empire, one of the most influential states in African history. More than a tale of conquest, the epic celebrates perseverance in the face of adversity and the belief that true strength comes from bringing people together.
