Behind the brand

Prologue

Before Alkebulan was a clothing brand, it was a collection of stories

This is our story

As two British-Ghanaians raised between two worlds, we were storytellers long before we became entrepreneurs. Before Alkebulan existed, we were simply children listening, learning and carrying forward the heritage stories that shaped us.

Some of our most treasured memories were not created in front of screens, but around people.

On warm evenings in Ghana, family, friends and neighbours would gather outdoors as stories travelled from one generation to the next. Often, it was the eldest person present who became the storyteller, sharing wisdom, lessons and memories with everyone gathered around. Sometimes these stories were told around fire pits. Sometimes they were shared under open skies during the familiar "lights off" periods that many African families will remember.

Among them were the famous Anansi stories, tales of the clever spider whose wit, humour and lessons have travelled across generations, cultures and continents. In those moments, storytelling was never just entertainment. It was how wisdom and values were passed on.

The collective
The collective

When we moved to the United Kingdom in our early teens, we found ourselves navigating life between two cultures. Sharing the stories, traditions and perspectives we had grown up with became second nature. What surprised us most was how often people leaned in. They were curious. They wanted to know more.

Years later, those conversations continued. Some took place in lecture halls, colleges and cafés while we studied at the University of Oxford. During our time at Oxford, we met people from all over the world who were fascinated by African culture and heritage, yet often had little opportunity to engage with the stories behind them.

Those conversations helped crystallise the idea that the stories that shaped us were not only African stories. Stories about heritage, identity, community, values and legacies. Alkebulan was born from a desire to explore and share those stories more deeply.

Our belief

Our belief is simple

That when someone wears Alkebulan, they do not simply wear clothing. They wear a story. A connection to heritage. A spark for conversation. A reminder that culture becomes meaningful when it is shared.

Because culture only survives when it is carried forward.

Join us in telling the stories that deserve to be remembered

Wear the story. Carry the culture.

Because what we carry forward, carries us
