Under the Baobab Tree
Under the Baobab Tree is the foundational Story Card for Alkebulan and the narrative heart of Tales of the Griot - Chapter I.
It centres on the image of people gathered beneath a baobab tree, seated in rings of firelight as a griot tells a story. The baobab, often associated with gathering, memory, and continuity -becomes a quiet stage where voice, presence, and listening converge.
Under the Baobab Tree reflects the act of storytelling itself: history carried through repetition, rhythm, and communal presence. Stories are not fixed records, but living exchanges shaped by those who listen and those who carry them forward.
The Lion of Mali
Inspired by the Epic of Sundiata Keita, The Lion of Mali reflects resilience, unity, and destiny.
The Epic of Sundiata is one of West Africa’s most revered oral traditions, recounting the life of Sundiata Keita, founder of the Mali Empire in the 13th century. Passed down by griots, the story blends history and legend to preserve memory through voice rather than text.
Born frail and unable to walk, Sundiata’s early life was marked by hardship and ridicule, particularly under the shadow of political rivalry within the royal court. Through perseverance, guidance, and community support, he rose to unite fractured Mandinka tribes, overcoming the sorcerer-king Soumaoro Kanté and establishing one of Africa’s most prosperous empires.
